In the Talsi region, a minor boy died after a collision between a car and a bicycle. The child was taken to the hospital with severe injuries, but he could not be saved.
A tragic accident occurred on Friday, May 22, in the municipality of Mersrags, Talsi region.
Around 11:25, the State Police received a report of a traffic accident on the Stende–Lauciene–Mersrags road. According to preliminary information, a Peugeot car driven by a man collided with a bicycle on which the boy was riding.
The child sustained severe injuries. He was taken to a medical facility, however, later the boy passed away.
The police reported that the driver of the vehicle was tested for alcohol — no signs of intoxication were found. A criminal process has been initiated regarding the incident, and the investigation is determining the exact circumstances and causes of the accident.
The tragedy resonated particularly strongly after the boy's mother posted on social media. Immediately after the accident, she reported that her son was on his way to school when he was hit by a minibus.
The woman asked people to pray for her child, stating that the coming hours could be crucial. Later, she reported that the boy had died in the hospital.
"Mikiņš will forever remain in our hearts as the most wonderful boy with big dreams," the mother wrote after her son's death.
The deaths of children in traffic accidents in Latvia always provoke a wide public response, especially at the beginning of the warm season when there are more cyclists and schoolchildren on the roads.
For many families, this tragedy serves as a reminder of how dangerous even familiar daily routes can be — the way to school, a bike ride, or crossing a rural road.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing.
