A Man of Advanced Age Did Not Yield to the Tram

During the day on Gaujā Street in Riga, traffic was temporarily hindered as the driver of a "Nissan" did not yield to the tram, causing a collision. Fortunately, the damage to the vehicles was significantly more serious than to the people involved in the accident.

When driving on Gaujā Street towards the Brasas Overpass, as well as when coming from the opposite direction intending to turn around, and while crossing Gaujā Street from Teraudlietuves Street, drivers are required to yield to the tram, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).

Otherwise, the same thing can happen as with the driver of the "Nissan," who was struck on the left side of the car by tram route 11. The car sustained serious damage; however, fortunately, the driver—a 67-year-old man—did not suffer severe injuries and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

For a time, traffic in this section of the road was hindered for both motorists and trams, but soon after the accident site was documented, firefighters removed the damaged vehicle from the tracks. People working near the accident site report that, unfortunately, drivers often do not take trams into account.

"This happens very often," says Kristine, who works nearby. "It's hard to watch. If I see it, I don't even want to... It's terribly sad," she adds.

None of the tram passengers required medical assistance.
