With the continuation of warm weather, the risks of illegal migration may increase, said the head of the State Border Guard (SBG) Guntis Pujats to the LETA agency.
According to him, the flows of illegal migration were influenced by Ramadan, so after the end of this holy month for Muslims in mid-March, the risks may increase.
The war in the Middle East has affected global flows of people; however, flights from this region have been completely canceled or restricted, making it extremely long and difficult to reach the Latvian border without flights, added Pujats.
As reported, until Thursday this year, 195 attempts at illegal border crossings have been prevented at the Latvian-Belarusian border.
The government has extended the enhanced border security regime at the Latvian-Belarusian border until June 30 of this year. This was implemented due to the increased flow of illegal migrants caused by the actions of Belarus. The enhanced regime is in effect in Ludza and the municipalities of Ludza County, Krāslava and its municipalities, Augšdaugava County, Daugavpils, as well as in the Kaunata municipality of the Rezekne County.
Last year, the State Border Guard prevented 12,046 attempts at illegal crossings of the Latvian-Belarusian border. For humanitarian reasons, 31 illegal migrants were not denied crossing the border. In 2024, 5,388 attempts at illegal crossings were prevented, and for humanitarian reasons, 26 people were admitted to the country.
