Doctors in Vidzeme, providing assistance to a 12-year-old girl, discovered that she had been sexually abused and is pregnant, reported LTV.
The pregnancy is already at least halfway through, but the family was unaware of the girl's condition or concealed it.
The police did not disclose from which city or village in Vidzeme the girl is. In order to protect the victim, details of the incident are not being released.
However, LTV has learned that the girl was taken to the hospital with abdominal pain. During the investigation, doctors determined that the girl had been sexually abused and is pregnant.
The spokesperson for the State Police, Zane Vaskane, explained that on February 11, information was received that a girl born in 2013 had approached a medical institution with complaints of abdominal pain. At the medical institution, she was diagnosed with "pregnancy." A criminal case has been initiated regarding this incident under Article 16 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to criminal offenses against morality and the inviolability of sexual integrity.
The hospital where the girl was treated and whose doctors also reported the incident to the police declined to comment further.
Sexual crimes against minors are serious offenses. By law, a 12-year-old girl is considered a person in a helpless state.
The perpetrator may be sentenced to imprisonment for a term ranging from several years to life.
