The police in Cyprus stated that the body found in mid-January belongs to the missing Russian businessman Vladislav Baumgertner. The causes of his death have not yet been determined.
The police of the British bases in Cyprus confirmed the death of the former head of the Russian company Uralkali, Vladislav Baumgertner. The body found in the south of the island belongs to the Russian businessman, TASS reported on Wednesday, February 4, citing the police department of the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
The identity of the Russian was established through DNA analysis. "We have no information about the causes of death. This means that this cause has not yet been determined," the police further stated.
The remains of the man were discovered in southern Cyprus in the area where Baumgertner went missing in mid-January; his identity could not be immediately established. The body was found in the Avdimu area in a state of advanced decomposition, and identification was decided to be conducted based on DNA analysis, Greek media reported.

According to media reports, the 53-year-old businessman went missing on January 7 in Limassol, and the police of Cyprus reported his disappearance on January 11. The last signal from his mobile phone was recorded on January 10 near the village of Pissouri, "on a steep, rocky coastline."
"Fontanka" found out that Baumgertner was actively engaged in rock climbing "and this time, presumably, decided to tackle another route." According to the publication, the main version of his death considered by the police is an accident.
On the day of Baumgertner's disappearance, a Russian embassy employee, Anton Panov, who worked as a cryptographer and was connected to the Russian special services, was found dead in Cyprus. On the same day, a hidden camera recording of a meeting of high-ranking Cypriot officials discussing corruption schemes, including assistance to Russians in circumventing EU sanctions, appeared on social media.
