This is not a terrorist act: a 60-year-old bomber has been detained in Estonia for blowing up a shopping center in Tallinn

A 60-year-old resident of Tallinn, who has been repeatedly convicted, is suspected of carrying out the explosion that occurred on Saturday at the Ülemiste shopping center.

"We can assert that the explosion was intentional. By Saturday evening, we had identified the suspect in the explosion," said Margus Palloson, the director general of the Security Police (KaPo), at a press conference on Sunday. "Today we have reason to be confident that this is indeed the person who carried out the explosion."

According to Palloson, after the suspect's detention, it can be considered that the threat to society has been neutralized. The incident is not classified as a terrorist act.

According to state prosecutor Astrid Aasi, the suspect is a 60-year-old resident of Tallinn; the prosecution plans to petition the court for his arrest.

"Based on the information available, we have reason to believe that the motive for this act is more likely personal revenge related to previous connections with this same shopping center," Aasi said. "This is a person who has previously been repeatedly convicted: he has been sentenced for both property crimes and crimes against the person."

The explosion occurred at the moment when a cleaner at the shopping center began emptying a trash container. The woman was injured and hospitalized, but her condition is not life-threatening.
