Eight drivers were detained for driving under the influence on Latvian roads over the past day, and another driver was behind the wheel under the influence of narcotic substances, the State Police reported to the LETA agency.
Eight criminal proceedings and one administrative proceeding have been initiated for driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or narcotic substances. Vehicle confiscation will be applied in three cases.
In addition, in just one day, 144 cases of speeding and two offenders who drove vehicles aggressively were recorded on the roads of Latvia.
A total of 361 administrative offense decisions were made in the field of road traffic over the past day, including 94 administrative offenses recorded in Vidzeme and 86 in Latgale.
It was previously reported that amendments to the criminal law came into force in November 2022, providing for criminal liability for driving a vehicle or teaching to drive a vehicle if the alcohol concentration in the driver's exhaled air or blood exceeds 1.5 per mille. Criminal liability is also provided for driving a vehicle or teaching to drive a vehicle under the influence of drugs, psychotropic, toxic, or other intoxicating substances.
In addition, a vehicle is confiscated if the owner drove it while in a state of severe intoxication or refused to undergo a test for the presence of intoxicating substances in the body. In cases where the vehicle used at the time of the offense belongs to another person, the full or partial cost of that vehicle is recovered from the guilty party.
