The State Police detained two individuals in November of this year, suspected of a series of thefts of telecommunications cables committed in the Kengarags neighborhood of Riga. According to available information, these individuals are linked to 15 thefts from cable manholes. Criminal proceedings have been initiated regarding this matter.
In November, the Eastern Division of the Riga Regional Department of the State Police received a report from a company about the theft of cable from a manhole in Kengarags.
On November 19, based on the information provided, the police began an investigation. During operational activities at the end of November, officers from the Eastern Division detained two individuals — a man born in 1983 and a woman born in 1990. The suspects had previously been convicted of various crimes, including property crimes and drug trafficking.
During procedural actions, it was revealed that these individuals may be involved in 14 similar thefts of telecommunications cables in Kengarags. Criminal proceedings have also been initiated in the Eastern Division regarding these episodes. After analyzing and securing evidence, the Eastern Prosecutor's Office of Riga decided on November 28 to consolidate all cases into one proceeding. The investigation is currently ongoing regarding 15 thefts.
The criminal process is classified under the third part of Article 175 of the Criminal Law — theft committed with breaking and entering into a premises or storage. Such a crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to five years, or short-term imprisonment, or probation supervision, or community service, or a monetary fine — with or without confiscation of property.
A preventive measure not related to imprisonment has been chosen for the suspects.
The State Police reminds that no person is considered guilty until their guilt in committing the crime is proven in accordance with the law.
