A 29-year-old man was killed under the wheels of a train near the Imanta railway station in Riga. According to the carrier, the conductor applied emergency braking and sounded the horn, but a collision could not be avoided.
The tragedy occurred near the Imanta station on a section of the railway where fatal incidents have happened before, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
According to the carrier Vivi, the electric train traveling on the Dubulti — Riga route noticed a man on the tracks before reaching the station. According to available data, he was moving towards the train.
The conductor immediately applied emergency braking and began to sound the horn continuously. However, the man did not respond to the warnings, and a collision could not be avoided.
Emergency services, including the State Fire and Rescue Service, the Emergency Medical Service, and the State Police, were called to the scene. While the emergency services worked at the site of the tragedy and carried out the necessary procedural actions, train traffic on the section was temporarily disrupted.
Local residents note that people often cross the railway tracks in this area, although there are designated places for this. However, according to eyewitnesses, in this case, it was not an attempt to cross the railway.
Additional information about the incident was obtained from the train's camera footage and the conductor's testimony. The responsible authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy.
The incident occurred just a few dozen meters from the spot where two 13-year-old girls died last autumn while crossing the tracks on an electric bicycle. In their memory, flowers still lie near the station.
Railway companies and safety services regularly remind that being on the tracks is dangerous and they should only be crossed at designated places.
The tragedy in Imanta once again highlighted how severe the consequences can be of being on railway tracks outside of permitted zones.
