On Monday, the Riga City Court sentenced former representative of the sports club "Babite" Girts Jeske to 12 years in prison and five years of probation supervision for child sexual abuse, the LETA agency learned in court.
The sentence has not yet come into effect and can be appealed in the Riga District Court.
The defendant's lawyer, Indulis Bukovskis, stated to Latvian Television that he would not provide comments at this time at the request of his client, including whether the sentence would be appealed.
The prosecutor's office confirmed to the LETA agency that Jeske was found guilty of four criminal acts under part four of Article 160 of the Criminal Law.
The claims of representatives of particularly vulnerable victims for compensation for moral damages in the amount of 10,000 euros for each criminal act were partially satisfied.
The defendant admitted guilt and cooperated with the prosecutor, choosing a simplified form of concluding the criminal process - a plea agreement that provided for a ten-year prison sentence, the prosecutor's office reported.
The agreement was not approved in court: after it was concluded, the representatives of the victim decided to exercise their rights and filed claims for compensation for moral damages. In this regard, the court transitioned to an oral process and examined the case with evidence verification only for part of the claimed compensations, the prosecutor's office explained.
The state prosecution considers the court's ruling a fair resolution of criminal-legal relations achieved through the reasonable exercise of rights and obligations by all parties involved, the prosecutor's office noted.
Earlier, the State Police stated in a media release that it had handed over to the prosecutor's office for the initiation of criminal proceedings against a man born in 1983 - a manager of one of the football clubs, suspected of sexually abusing three minors, which occurred in March and April of this year. The suspect was placed in custody as a preventive measure.
The criminal process was initiated this year on April 21 based on information provided by the children's parents that sexual acts were committed against their children by the football club manager from April 17 to April 19 during a trip organized by the football club.
On April 21, a man born in 1983 was detained.
During the further investigation, another case of sexual abuse against a minor was identified, which occurred in March of this year in Latvia.
For such an act, the criminal law provides for imprisonment from five to 15 years with probation supervision for up to five years.
Jeske ran for local government elections in the Marupe region on the list of the Latvian Regional Alliance (LRA). He was not a member of the LRA but was included in the list as a representative of the local sports community.
After Jeske's detention, the Latvian Football Federation stated that Jeske was suspended from any football-related activities.
According to "Firmas.lv", Jeske owns the advertising company "Mpresto". The company's turnover last year was 111,388 euros, and the profit was 78,417 euros.
