Last week, fraudsters extorted 1.69 million euros from residents of Latvia - this is one of the largest amounts of damage in a week recently, the State Police reported to the LETA agency.
From December 1 to 7, the State Police registered 261 cases of fraud. In 77 cases, residents lost money, while in 184 cases, the fraudsters' attempts did not result in financial harm to potential victims. The total losses for the population amount to at least 1,691,717 euros.
Most of the funds were still stolen as a result of vishing, or false calls, where fraudsters posed as employees of the State Police, mobile operators, the State Revenue Service, credit institutions, postal services, or social services. Last week, telephone scammers managed to extort 1,263,492 euros, with the highest number of such cases once again registered in the Riga region - 164.
