The Riga City Court approved the agreement between the prosecutor and the man for the application of probation supervision for a period of one year and three months in connection with the death of the pensioner, who was struck by an icicle, reports the LETA agency citing the prosecutor's office.
The man admitted his guilt in committing the crime through negligence, paid the relative of the deceased compensation for moral damages in the amount of 15,000 euros, reached a settlement with the victim, and apologized for his actions.
As part of the criminal case, the owner of one of the houses was charged with causing death by negligence. The accused owns a multi-apartment residential building in the Latgale suburb of Riga.
According to the mandatory rules of the Riga City Council, the owner is obliged to ensure the cleaning of balconies, loggias, and roofs of buildings from snow and ice, to knock down icicles to prevent them from falling from roofs, cornices, downspouts, and balconies in cases where there is a threat to the safety of pedestrians and vehicles, to timely cordon off dangerous areas, and to take measures to remove snow, ice, and icicles using all possible safety means.
As stated in the indictment, the man, knowing that there was snow, ice, and icicles on the roof of his house, and realizing that their fall could pose a threat to the life and safety of pedestrians, took no action to clear the roof.
Due to the irresponsible actions of this person, on December 13, 2023, a piece of ice fell from the roof of the specified building, injuring a pedestrian. As a result, severe bodily injuries were inflicted, and the person died at the scene.
It was previously reported that on December 13, 2023, in Riga, in the Latgale suburb, at 62 Kalna Street, a man born in 1941 was injured and died due to falling ice from the roof of a multi-apartment building.
