The candidate for the position of Attorney General of the Republic, Chief Prosecutor Armīns Meisters, stated that he wants to ensure the real capability of the Bureau for Prevention and Combating Corruption (KNAB) to perform its functions. He reported this in the LTV program.
He noted that recently there have been fewer "high-profile cases" from KNAB than usual.
In response to a question about the quality of materials presented by the Bureau, Meisters emphasized that crime is becoming increasingly complex, and criminals no longer act so primitively that corruption crimes can be easily solved and results quickly achieved. He stated that he needs to understand what the real operational and investigative capacity of KNAB is, meet with the bureau's leadership, and find out "what exactly the problem is."
When asked for clarification on whether he sees a problem, Meisters answered affirmatively, adding that it is important to understand whether this is a problem within KNAB itself — whether there is a lack of investigative or operational capacity, or if "we are lagging behind modern forms of crime, or if the problem lies in the regulatory framework."
It was previously reported that the Justice Council decided on Friday to nominate Armīns Meisters, the chief prosecutor of the Riga Judicial District Prosecutor's Office, for the position of Attorney General.
According to the law, the Attorney General is appointed by the Saeima for a term of five years upon the proposal of the Justice Council. The same person may hold this position for no more than two consecutive terms. Meisters has been the chief prosecutor of the Riga Judicial District Prosecutor's Office since May 2018. He has worked in various divisions of the prosecutor's office, including positions as the chief prosecutor of the Central District of Riga and the chief prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office for the Investigation of Financial and Economic Crimes.
