The Council of Justice has decided to nominate senior prosecutor of the Riga Judicial District Prosecutor's Office Armins Meisters for the position of Attorney General, the chairman of the Supreme Court and head of the council Aigars Strupišs informed the journalists.
According to the law, the Saeima appoints the Attorney General for a five-year term upon the proposal of the Council of Justice.
Meisters has served as the senior prosecutor of the Riga Judicial District Prosecutor's Office since 2018. He has worked in various divisions of the prosecutor's office since 2000, including positions as the senior prosecutor of the Central District Prosecutor's Office of Riga and the senior prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office for the Investigation of Financial and Economic Crimes.
As reported, in the repeated competition for the position of Attorney General, applications were submitted by the current Attorney General Juris Stukans, Constitutional Court judge, former prosecutor Juris Juriss, and former prosecutor of the specialized prosecutor's office for organized crime and other sectors Janis Ilsteris, in addition to Meisters.
Stukans' term expired on July 11, but following the first competition in the spring of this year, a new Attorney General could not be selected, as none of the three candidates received the support of the Council of Justice and were not nominated for approval by the Saeima. At that time, Stukans, the prosecutor of the Department of Coordination of Prosecutorial Functions of the Department of Control of Activities and International Cooperation of the Prosecutor General's Office Uvis Kozlovskis, and the senior prosecutor of the same department Aivars Ostapko were contenders for the position.
Until a new Attorney General is appointed, the duties are being performed by senior prosecutor Arvids Kalniņš.
