On the night of November 1, in the Italian town of Castel D'Aiano, province of Bologna, unknown individuals stole nearly 200 wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese from a dairy cooperative's warehouse, with a total value exceeding 100,000 euros, reports Il Resto del Carlino.
According to the president of the cooperative, Dario Zappoli, the unknown perpetrators acted with extraordinary precision and preparation.
They stole two cars, accessed the facility from the rear via a steep slope, and entered the premises after the workers had gone home. The robbery began around 7:50 PM and lasted until two in the morning.
Preliminary estimates suggest that the thieves stole 191 wheels of Parmesan, each weighing 42 kilograms, but "their number continues to grow, which means the damage will exceed 100,000 euros at this point." "We fear that the estimate is not accurate," Zappoli said.
After the robbery, the vehicles were likely transferred to a truck in the Tole area. Surveillance cameras captured the moment of the crime, and the investigation is already being conducted by the carabinieri.
"We hope that the insurance company will help us. We have already installed a better security system. We were so calm, everyone was busy with their work. We never expected to encounter something like this," Zappoli concluded.
