On Monday, September 29, Latvian border guards detained four Latvian citizens in the Balvi region who were transporting several dozen kilograms of potent narcotic substances worth hundreds of thousands of euros across the state border.
During operational activities, border guards discovered a caravan of drug traffickers heading towards Russia. Upon attempting to detain them, the offenders fled.
But it was not that easy – a service dog picked up the trail and found three bags containing a narcotic substance derived from Indian hemp, more commonly known as hashish, about 100 meters from the state border.
The chase did not end there. Continuing the pursuit, border guards stopped two vehicles on the Cērpene–Balvi road and detained two Latvian citizens who were accomplices to the crime.
Later, together with the State Police, the border guards stopped a Volkswagen Passat in the same Balvi region, which contained two individuals transporting the aforementioned bags.
A criminal case has been initiated under the third part of Article 190 of the Criminal Law for large-scale smuggling. Upon inspecting the bags, it was determined that they contained a dark-colored solid substance – hashish.
On the "black market," the price of a gram of hashish ranges from 8 to 12 euros. Thus, 1 kg costs approximately 10,000 euros, and the mentioned "several dozen" kilograms are valued at several hundred thousand euros. But that's retail. Wholesale is probably cheaper.
