BBC plans to cut hundreds of jobs in its key news division as part of a radical staff reduction, the Financial Times reports.

Departments across the corporation have been instructed to cut about 10% of their costs as part of broader plans that will lead to the loss of around 2,000 jobs.

The news departments, which are expected to announce their plans first next week, account for about a quarter of more than 20,000 employees.

The announcement is expected to affect specific radio programs, and insiders say the cuts may become noticeable to BBC viewers and listeners.

The BBC declined to comment to the FT.

In an interview with the FT last month, the new CEO, Matt Brittin, a former Google executive, stated that the BBC faces the necessity of making difficult and unpopular decisions. According to him, employee feedback boils down to a desire to avoid "salami slicing" — cuts that would lead to overwork.

Cost controls on hiring and travel have also been implemented across the corporation, expenses on management consulting have been reduced, and spending on conferences, bonuses, and events has been cut, the FT reports.
