The volume of railway freight transportation in Latvia for the first three months of the current year decreased by 18.3% compared to the same period in 2025, amounting to 1.853 million tons, according to data from the Ministry of Transport.
The volume of international transportation in the first quarter amounted to 1.468 million tons, which is 21.2% less than in the same period last year, while the volume of domestic transportation decreased by 5.4% to 385,000 tons. For comparison, the volume of railway freight transportation on the infrastructure of JSC "Latvijas dzelzceļš" (LDz) for the first three months of 2015 was 13.67 million.
The volume of transit cargo in the first three months of 2026 amounted to 1.232 million tons, which is 16.5% less, including transit through ports of 1.029 million tons, which is 17.5% less, and land transit of 203,000 tons, which is 11.4% less.
Export transportation by rail in the first quarter amounted to 154,000 tons, which is half as much, while import transportation was 1.111 million tons, which is 16.2% less.
As reported, in 2025, the volume of railway freight transportation in Latvia decreased by 17.6% compared to 2024, amounting to 9.454 million tons.
