Sick Leave Benefits Expenditures Increased in 2025. They Will Rise Even More This Year

€373.81 million was spent on sick leave benefits in 2025, which is €14.64 million or approximately 4% more than in 2024, when €359.17 million was paid for these purposes, according to data from the State Social Insurance Agency (VSAA), LETA reports.

In 2025, €189.16 million was allocated for unemployment benefits, which is €3.9 million more than in 2024 (€185.26 million).

€132.78 million was spent on parental benefits in 2025 — €4.14 million more than the previous year (€128.64 million).

€64.94 million was allocated for maternity and paternity benefits in 2025, which is €2.64 million more than in 2024 (€62.3 million).

€109.24 million was spent on social benefits related to workplace accidents in 2025, which is €12.19 million more than in 2024 (€97.05 million).

According to the presentation, €427.47 million is planned for sick leave benefits in 2026 — an increase of €53.66 million or 14.4% compared to 2025.

The average sick leave benefit in 2026 is expected to be €1,802.04 per month, which is €198.16 or 12.4% more than in 2025 (€1,603.88). The average number of recipients in 2026 is projected to be 19,800 per month, which is 400 more than in 2025.

€206.13 million is planned for unemployment benefits in 2026 — an increase of €16.97 million or 9% compared to 2025.

The average unemployment benefit in 2026 will be €544.67 per month, which is €32.18 or 6.3% more than in 2025 (€512.49). The number of recipients is projected to be 31,500 per month — 700 more than in 2025.

€150.78 million is allocated for parental benefits in 2026 — an increase of €18 million or 13.6% compared to 2025.

€68.39 million is planned for maternity and paternity benefits in 2026 — an increase of €3.45 million or 5.3% compared to 2025.

This year, an increase in the average amount of maternity, paternity, and parental benefits is also expected. The average maternity benefit is expected to be €5,631.53 per month, which is €222 or 4.1% more than in 2025 (€5,409.53), according to data from the State Social Insurance Agency (VSAA) on the dynamics of indicators from 2021 to 2026.

The number of recipients of this benefit is expected to be slightly lower — an average of 890 people per month compared to 900 the previous year.

The average paternity benefit in 2026 will be €951.64 per month — an increase of €71.27 or 8.1% compared to 2025 (€880.37), while the number of recipients will increase to 710 people per month compared to 623 in 2025.

The average parental benefit in 2026 will also increase — to €859.91 per month, which is €74.15 or 9.4% more than in 2025 (€785.76). The number of recipients may increase to 14,600 people per month compared to 14,100 the previous year.

€121.61 million is planned for social benefits related to workplace accidents in 2026 — an increase of €12.37 million or 11.3% compared to 2025.

The average amount of payments and compensations for workplace accidents in 2026 will be €641.88 per month — an increase of €32.35 or 5.3% compared to 2025 (€609.53). The number of recipients is projected to be 15,790 people per month, which is 850 more than in 2025.
