The Profit of Latvian Banks Continues to Decline

Latvian monetary financial institutions, primarily banks, earned €29.5 million in January, which is 18.5% less than in the corresponding period of 2025, according to data from the Bank of Latvia.

Latvian monetary financial institutions, primarily banks, earned €29.5 million in January, which is 18.5% less than in the corresponding period of 2025, according to data from the Bank of Latvia.

As of January 31, the assets of monetary financial institutions amounted to €31.89 billion, which is 7.3% or €2.169 billion more than at the end of January 2025 (€29.721 billion).

The outstanding loans issued to residents of Latvia at the end of January amounted to €15.695 billion, which is 11.9% more than a year earlier. Monetary financial institutions issued loans in euros to residents totaling €15.633 billion (+12.2% compared to the same period last year), while the outstanding loans in foreign currency amounted to €62.3 million (-33.6%).

The outstanding deposits of residents at the end of January amounted to €21.133 billion, which is 9.1% more than in January last year, including deposits in euros totaling €19.91 billion and in foreign currency totaling €1.222 billion. Compared to the same period last year, the volume of deposits in euros increased by 9.9%, while in foreign currency it decreased by 2.9%.

The capital and reserves of Latvian monetary financial institutions at the end of January amounted to €3.537 billion, which is 4.7% less than a year earlier.

In 2025, the profit of monetary financial institutions amounted to €341.7 million, which is 34.5% less than in 2024, including a profit of €36.2 million in January.
