Users of the popular identity verification application "Smart-ID" can expect new features. In the latest version, there is no longer a need to enter a personal code and compare control codes.
The new version of the application programming interface (API) is called "Smart-ID+"; however, as noted by SK ID Solutions representative Allan Juhe, users do not need to download a new application.
New features will appear in the already installed "Smart-ID" application. With automatic updates enabled, the new version will install itself.
According to A. Juhe, the changes are aimed at protecting users from fraudsters. Now, when logging into electronic services, there is no need to enter a personal code or verify control codes.
Authentication is directly linked to the user's device — both the initiation of the operation and its confirmation occur on the phone itself. This enhances protection, especially against phishing attacks.
Confirming a login or, for example, a money transfer can only be done if the action is initiated in the "Smart-ID" application. The user must independently start and confirm each transaction on their phone.
There are two ways to log in:
-
using a dynamic QR code when connecting via a computer or another device;
-
through automatic app-to-app transitions when using a phone.
In the first case, the user scans the QR code in the "Smart-ID" application and confirms the action with a PIN1 code.
In the second case, when choosing to log in through "Smart-ID," the application opens automatically, and the action is confirmed with a PIN1 without entering a personal code or QR code.
The new features will be implemented in electronic services gradually, depending on the technical readiness of service providers. While some services have not yet been updated, "Smart-ID" can still be used in the usual way.
Age Verification in Stores
The "Smart-ID+" solution for age verification at self-service checkouts was first implemented by a Lithuanian retail chain in the Baltic countries.
Customers purchasing alcohol or energy drinks need to scan a QR code on the checkout screen and enter their PIN1. The system automatically checks the age and allows the purchase to be completed without the involvement of staff.
The technology will be available in Estonia and Lithuania starting December 2025, while it will arrive in Latvia with a significant delay — in March.
