Consumers are increasingly interested in discontinued Apple MP3 players due to nostalgia and "digital burnout," Axios reports.
The number of search queries for the iPod Classic and iPod Nano on the online auction site eBay increased by 25% and 20%, respectively, from January to October 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
According to the website, this interest is part of a trend of returning to offline devices and hobbies. According to Cal Newport, a professor of computer science and author of the book "Digital Minimalism," older technologies tend to be "single-purpose."
"For example, with an iPod, you can only listen to music <...>. Smartphones, on the other hand, combine music, messages, social media feeds, news, and much more, making it nearly impossible to maintain constant control over technology use," he believes.
The iPod debuted in 2001. The slogan introduced by Steve Jobs in 2001 was: "1000 songs in your pocket."
Apple officially discontinued the last player in the iPod line — the iPod Touch (7th generation) in May 2022. Prior to that, in 2017, the production of the iPod Nano and Shuffle was halted, and in 2014, the iPod Classic was discontinued.
