China Reduces Tariffs on Dairy Imports from the EU

China announced on Thursday that it will reduce the tariffs imposed in December on certain dairy products imported from the European Union (EU), LETA reported citing AFP.

Tariffs ranging from 7.4% to 11.7% will take effect on Friday.

In December, China imposed temporary tariffs on the import of certain dairy products from the EU, ranging from 21.9% to 42.7%.

At the same time, Beijing announced on Thursday that the reduced tariffs will be in effect for five years.

They will apply to various dairy products, including fresh and processed cheeses, cottage cheese, blue cheeses, as well as milk and cream, noted the Ministry of Commerce of China.

China began an investigation into the import of dairy products from the EU in August 2024 at the request of the China Dairy Industry Association. The investigation will conclude in February.

The Ministry of Commerce of China reported on Thursday that the findings of the investigation indicate a link between EU subsidies and the significant harm they cause to the Chinese dairy industry.

As reported, on December 17, China imposed anti-dumping duties ranging from 4.9% to 19.8% on pork imports from the EU.

These tariffs are lower than the temporary ones imposed in September, which ranged from 15.6% to 62.4%, but they will be in effect for five years.

China began an investigation into pork imports from the EU in June 2024 shortly after the EU imposed tariffs on imports of electric vehicles produced in China. Later, China imposed anti-dumping duties on imports of European brandy and cognac.
