Have you been to the stores for a long time? Food prices have been falling for almost six months - UN

Food prices in the world have decreased for the fifth consecutive month, according to the UN.

According to January results, the aggregated global food price index decreased by 0.5 points to 123.9 points. This was reported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The downward trend has persisted for the fifth consecutive month. At the beginning of 2026, the rise in prices for grains and vegetable oils was more than offset by the decrease in dairy products (down 6.4 percentage points), meat, and sugar.

The decline in dairy prices to a two-year low is attributed to high competition. Meat prices have fallen to a minimum since May last year due to weak demand for pork.

The price index allows for the assessment of food costs relative to a baseline level. The increase in the indicator for sunflower oil to 168.6 points means it has become 1.686 times more expensive than at the beginning of the calculations, while the decrease in the index for sugar to 89.8 points indicates a price drop of 10.2 percent.
