In Old Riga, on Smilšu Street, the restaurant and bar Barents, included in the international gastronomic guide Michelin Guide, has been confirmed to close by the director of the restaurant and bar, Laura Podgurska.
According to her, the last day of operation for the restaurant and bar will be January 31.
Podgurska explained that the main reasons for the closure of the restaurant and bar were the insufficient number of tourists throughout the year.
She added that in 2025 the restaurant was noticeably full during major events such as the European Basketball Championship, the Christmas Market, and Restaurant Week; however, at other times of the year, it is difficult for elite restaurants to attract tourists.
"At the same time, unfortunately, locals cannot afford to regularly visit high-end restaurants," she noted.
The restaurant director also emphasized that the costs for high-level establishments are very high due to the need for experienced professionals. "The overall expense during unstable demand becomes very high," Podgurska added.
Thus, this will be the second restaurant in Latvia included in the Michelin Guide that will close in January this year. As previously reported, on January 12, the seafood restaurant Tails ceased operations on Antonijas Street in Riga.
