Switzerland Earned $33 Billion from Gold Surge

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) recorded a profit of approximately $32.52 billion in 2025 due to a significant rise in gold prices, as investors sought safe assets last year.

Preliminary data indicates a decline compared to the record profit of 80.7 billion francs earned by the SNB in 2024, but it still remains among the top five largest profits generated by the central bank in its 119-year history.

The SNB's profit in 2025 increased due to an estimated profit of 36.3 billion francs from gold reserves, as investors bought the precious metal to protect themselves from global economic shocks caused by tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

This figure became the largest profit the SNB has ever made from gold, driven by a 64% increase in the value of the precious metal in 2025, which raised the value of the 1,040 metric tons of gold it holds.

However, the central bank's profit was tempered by losses of 9 billion francs on its currency positions.

As a result, the SNB will be able to pay 4 billion francs to the central government of Switzerland and the cantonal governments, as well as dividends of 15 francs per share to investors.
