The share of the shadow economy in Latvia may have continued to decline last year, said Baiba Šmite-Roke, the director general of the State Revenue Service (SRS), in an interview on the Latvian Television (LTV) program "Morning Panorama" on Wednesday, LETA reports.

"I think the shadow economy decreased last year as well," said Šmite-Roke.

At the same time, she pointed out that the state does not measure the volume of the shadow economy - such studies are conducted by the director of the Sustainable Business Center at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Arnis Sauka, and Professor Talis Putniņš, and these studies indicate that the share of the shadow economy in Latvia has been decreasing over the past three years.

As previously reported, according to the study by the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, "The Shadow Economy Index in the Baltic States," in 2024, the share of the shadow economy in Latvia decreased by 1.5 percentage points compared to the previous year, amounting to 21.4% of the gross domestic product (GDP).

At the same time, in Estonia, the share of the shadow economy increased from 17.9% of GDP in 2023 to 19.5% in 2024, while in Lithuania, compared to the figures from 2023, this indicator decreased by 1.7 percentage points, totaling 24.7% of GDP.
