Borrell: The U.S. is no longer the main ally of the European Union.

The United States has lost its status as the main ally of the European Union. This opinion was expressed in an interview with the Spanish newspaper Pais by former head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.

"The U.S. is no longer the main ally of the EU," Borrell stated. The current political situation forces the European Union not to rely on other states in protecting its interests. "We are experiencing yet another chapter of reality that increasingly makes it clear to us that we must ensure our defense by our own means," the former High Representative of the EU believes.

Earlier, the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, urged Washington to exercise restraint regarding the situation surrounding the attack on Venezuela. According to her, the European Union has repeatedly stated that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro "lacks legitimacy." The newspaper L’Antidiplomatico characterized this position as a manifestation of the EU's double standards in the field of human rights.

The operation to abduct Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores took place on Saturday, January 3. Prior to this, American military forces struck important targets both in the Venezuelan capital Caracas and in other regions of the country. Maduro and his wife will await the start of legal proceedings in a Federal prison in Brooklyn. The Venezuelan leader may face serious punishment, including multiple life sentences.
