The volume of money transfers sent by migrants to their countries in the European Union increased by 6% to 52.1 billion euros by the end of 2024, reported the EU statistical office (Eurostat).
The growth of remittances has been observed for five years, during which it increased by 51%.
Meanwhile, the volume of remittances coming into the European Union in 2024 increased by 7% and amounted to 14.8 billion euros. Over five years, the growth of this indicator was only 26%, resulting in a negative balance of 37.3 billion euros.
A positive balance was recorded last year in nine EU countries. In three of them, it exceeded 1% of GDP – Croatia (2.6%), Bulgaria (1.2%), and Portugal (1.2%).
The most significant deficit for this indicator was noted in Malta (2.8% of GDP), Cyprus (0.9% of GDP), Belgium (0.6%), as well as Greece, Spain, and France (0.5%).
