The British Broadcasting Corporation BBC lost £1.17 billion (over $1.53 billion) in 2024 due to a loss of popularity and non-payers, the Sun reports, citing a report from the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee.
"Facing difficulties, the BBC lost more than one billion pounds last year after a record number of families refused to pay the license fee," the publication reports.
According to the Sun, in 2024, about 3.6 million households opted out of the corporation's services, which is 300,000 more than the previous year. This resulted in losses amounting to 617 million pounds.
"The report concludes that only half of young people believe the BBC reflects their viewpoint," the Sun writes.
Another 2.9 million BBC viewers evaded the fee, depriving the broadcasting company of 550 million pounds (over 719 million dollars).
Despite the fact that the number of checks on households not paying the fee increased by 50% over the past year, the number of lawsuits against non-payers fell by 17%. As the newspaper reports, people simply do not open the door to the staff collecting the fee.
In 2024, the BBC spent 166 million pounds (over 151 million dollars) on attempts to collect money, which constitutes 4.3% of its total budget.
