It has become known which retail chain in Latvia was fined nearly 2 million euros

The Competition Council (CC) imposed a fine of more than 1.8 million euros on the retailer "Maxima Latvija" for engaging in unfair trading practices, confirmed the company's representative Liene Dupate-Ugule to the LETA agency.

It was reported that the decision will be appealed.

According to Dupate-Ugule, "Maxima Latvija" received a decision from the Competition Council (CC) on Wednesday, November 5, stating that in certain cases the company did not agree with the proposed commercial terms from suppliers. The company disagrees with the CC's assessment.

"Latvian legislation does not restrict the right of a retailer to negotiate acceptable commercial terms or to refuse to purchase goods if the proposed price is not satisfactory," she emphasized.

Dupate-Ugule added that the company is always focused on ensuring low prices for customers, which includes discussing commercial terms with partners. According to her, cooperation with suppliers is always based on mutual respect, as confirmed by both local and international partners.

As reported by bb.lv, the Competition Council will provide more details about the identified violations at a press conference tomorrow, November 6.

It should be noted that last year, "Maxima Latvija" achieved a turnover of 1.102 billion euros, which is 2.6% more than the previous year, and the company's profit amounted to 50.775 million euros.

The owners of "Maxima Latvija" are Lithuanian companies "Maxima grupe" and "Maxima LT," which are part of the Lithuanian business group "Vilniaus prekyba" controlled by Nerijus Numavicius.
