Postal companies gradually resume the delivery of parcels to the USA. Despite the demand for this route, some enterprises, including "Latvijas Pasts," halted this delivery in September due to changes in US tariffs, public media reports.
Gifts are non-commercial items, so the cost of such shipments to the USA will not increase for now; however, commercial shipments are expected to become more expensive, according to companies' forecasts.
The enterprise "Omniva" resumed the delivery of gifts to the USA worth up to $100 this week after nearly a two-month break. "Omniva," like other European postal companies, halted the delivery of these shipments at the end of August when a new requirement from the USA regarding declaration and payment of customs duties came into effect, including for low-value shipments. Company representative Janis Andžāns explained that automated customs declaration and timely delivery can now be ensured specifically for non-commercial goods. These shipments to the USA also require declaration, but they are currently exempt from taxes and customs duties.
In early October, "Latvijas Pasts" resumed the delivery of all types of letters, including documents, to the USA; however, the flow of parcels and packages to the USA remains suspended. According to postal representative Kristians Godiņš, the USA is one of the priority destinations, and "Latvijas Pasts" will gradually restore this flow for both gifts and commercial shipments in the near future. "Latvijas Pasts" also noted that gifts worth up to 100 euros can be sent to the USA without customs duties. This does not mean that commercial shipments can be disguised in this way, as the USA will strictly check each gift shipment.
