"LDz Cargo", a subsidiary of the state-owned company "Latvijas dzelzceļš" (LDz), has faced a reduction in financial turnover of at least one third in recent years due to geopolitical events: from 148.4 million euros in 2022 to 100.4 million euros in 2024, according to the Ministry of Transport, reports Latvijas Avīze.
To stabilize its financial situation, a reorganization of the enterprises within the LDz group has begun, as well as the sale of assets, including freight cars from "LDz Cargo".
It was previously reported that in 2022, with the onset of Russian aggression in Ukraine, the Latvian company "LDz Cargo" found itself with a significant amount of movable property - freight cars - stranded in the occupied territory of Ukraine. Just recently, at the end of August and September, "LDz Cargo" held another series of electronic auctions, where 153 freight cars located in Ukraine were put up for sale.
To attract potential buyers, the auction organizers divided the assets for sale into several lots. For example, at the August auction, out of 66 cars, a lot of 10 cars was priced at 40,900 euros, while a lot of 33 cars was priced at 89,900 euros. A similar principle was applied at the September auction with increments of 100 euros. As "Latvijas Avīze" reported, LDz representative Agnese Licite stated that these cars were manufactured between 1979 and 1991, and their operation is impossible without significant additional investments.
"LDz Cargo" conducted several auctions for the sale of 66 freight cars, and only at the last one were 12 cars sold. A decision on holding repeat auctions for the remaining 54 cars has not yet been made. Several auctions were also held for the sale of 87 freight cars, but all of them ended without results, and in this case, at least one more auction is planned.
In early October, the Register of Enterprises decided to reorganize three subsidiaries of the LDz group. As a result, the companies "LDz ritošā sastāva serviss" and "LDz loģistika" were merged into "LDz Cargo". Thus, LDz fulfilled the government directive from June 25. The merger of the companies will simplify the administrative process, which had previously been complicated by the procurement of services from one another, as well as reduce management costs and the overall number of staff. Additionally, it is expected that the merger will improve the pricing policy for LDz services, which had previously been carried out separately by "LDz loģistika".
