The railways of the Baltic States are planned to be disconnected from the Russian information system and connected to the European one, said Lithuania's Minister of Transport and Communications Juris Taminskas.

"One of the directions is the 'Free Rail' program, under which the railways will disconnect from the Russian information system and switch to the European one. We are currently working actively with Latvia and Estonia so that next year we will have a unified system," said Taminskas.

Lithuania's Vice Minister of Transport and Communications Julius Glebov stated that Lithuania currently does not fundamentally use the Russian system, but Russian rolling stock and locomotives are still in use. Glebov was unable to answer how much the implementation of such plans would cost.

As noted by Lithuanian railway workers, due to historical circumstances, the railways of the Baltic States are still connected to Moscow, and communication with third countries is still carried out in accordance with the rules of the Council for Railway Transport based in Russia.
