Ride Mobility continued scooter rentals despite the Consumer Rights Protection Centre«s ban

The mini-scooter rental operator "Ride Mobility" (LLC "Ride") has not suspended its services and sent a letter to the Consumer Rights Protection Centre (CRPC) regarding the unfounded nature of the decision, said Edgar Jakobsons, the CEO of "Ride".

He stated that the company, along with its lawyers, analyzed the decision of the Consumer Rights Protection Centre and sent a letter to the institution indicating that the decision was, in Ride's opinion, disproportionate and unfounded.

"The Consumer Rights Protection Centre will likely respond to us. Then we will assess their arguments," said Jakobsons.

As reported, yesterday the Consumer Rights Protection Centre decided to suspend the services of the mini-scooter rental operator "Ride Mobility".

The decision was made following a call from the Mayor of Riga, Viesturs Kleinbergs, to evaluate the company's activities, which, in turn, followed the death of two girls born in 2012 who were hit by a train in Imanta while using a "Ride Mobility" device and died.

According to Kleinbergs, the main objection is that "Ride Mobility" aggressively positions its vehicles as self-propelled bicycles rather than electric scooters. These machines are equipped with pedals but are not used as bicycles, which has lowered the requirements for their use. If they were classified as scooters, children would not be allowed to use them, and users would need to have a driver's license.
