Montenegro continues to confidently move towards the final stage of the negotiation process with the European Union. Today, at the Intergovernmental Conference in Luxembourg, this Balkan country closed two new negotiation chapters.

These are Chapter 2 (“Freedom of Movement for Workers”) and Chapter 28 (“Consumer Protection and Health”). The Montenegrin delegation at this significant event is headed by Prime Minister Milojko Spajić.

With the closure of these two chapters, Montenegro has officially completed negotiations on 14 out of 33 chapters. This is the best result among all candidate countries for EU membership. The government of the country states that it plans to close all remaining negotiation positions by the end of the current year.

Thus, Montenegro confirms its status as the most successful candidate for joining the European Union and remains the main contender to become the next full member of the community. It is expected that after the conference, Spajić will hold a briefing together with European Commissioner Marta Koš.

According to President Jakov Milatović, after joining the North Atlantic Alliance in 2017, the next important stage for the country will be full Euro-integration.

“Twenty years ago, the citizens of Montenegro took decision-making into their own hands, and this became the foundation of our development,” he said.

“The greatest progress was likely achieved when the country became a member of NATO in 2017. For such a small country as Montenegro, NATO membership is extremely important because the Alliance is indeed a guarantor of the security of our independence and statehood,” the president added.

Milatović expressed confidence that the country, with a population of 623,000, will achieve its ambitious goal of becoming the next, 28th, member of the European Union in 2028.

“We can achieve this. I am optimistic,” Milatović assured.
