The tragedy occurred in the Brazilian state of São Paulo during an extreme jump from a 40-meter bridge. The girl fell after the organizers failed to secure the safety cable.
In Brazil, a 21-year-old girl died during an extreme jump from a bridge after the organizers forgot to attach the safety cable. Six people have been detained in connection with the case, reports NOS.
The tragedy occurred on the Ponte do Esqueleto (“Skeleton Bridge”) in the city of Limeira in São Paulo state. Video footage posted on social media shows three instructors lifting the girl and bringing her to the edge of the platform, after which they push her down. Behind them on the ground lies an unused safety cable.
A few seconds after the jump, panicked screams can be heard on the recording: “Cable! Cable!”. The staff realizes that the safety was not secured, but they can no longer prevent the tragedy.
Arriving medics could only confirm the girl’s death.
According to local media, after the incident, two organizers fled into the woods but were found by the police with the help of a helicopter.
The woman who was supposed to jump next told investigators that the instructors did not conduct the mandatory equipment and safety system check before the deceased's jump.
The tragedy took on an even more dramatic tone due to the girl's Instagram post shortly before the jump. She posted photos from the bridge and ironically captioned them: “Who was the crazy one who convinced me to jump off a bridge?”
This was not a classic bungee jumping with an elastic cord. In this type of entertainment, a system of ropes is used that is supposed to smoothly stop the participant's fall, after which they swing back and forth. Because of this, the attraction is often referred to as a “human pendulum.”
It turned out that the group organizing the jumps did not have official permission to conduct such events. The bridge itself has not been used for vehicle traffic for about 30 years but remains a popular spot among extreme sports enthusiasts.
The investigation is looking into all the circumstances of the tragedy, but preliminary data indicates gross violations of safety rules. The case has once again raised questions about the regulation of extreme entertainment and the responsibility of their organizers.
