A large inscription '8647' was discovered on the grounds of the National Mall in Washington, appearing on the lawn near the World War II Memorial. In the U.S., this combination of numbers is interpreted by many as a call to "get rid of" President Donald Trump, which has already attracted the attention of law enforcement and the White House.
An unusual inscription was noticed on a plot east of the memorial. According to CNN, the numbers gradually appeared on the grass over several days. Footage from a webcam installed at the top of the Washington Monument shows the drawing becoming increasingly visible. However, it was almost impossible to distinguish from ground level.
When exactly the numbers appeared is still unknown. Photos of the National Mall taken on June 5 showed no traces of the inscription. On Thursday, part of the area was temporarily closed off by emergency services.
The U.S. Park Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Specialists have taken grass samples for analysis to determine the cause of the color change. It is still unclear whether chemicals or other methods were used to create the image.
The significance of the numbers has sparked particular resonance. In American slang, the number 86 can mean "to get rid of," "to reject," or "to remove." The number 47 is often associated with Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States. As a result, the combination "8647" is perceived by some of the president's supporters and members of his entourage as a hint at Trump's removal.
The White House stated that any manifestations of political violence and the so-called "culture of assassination" deserve condemnation. The U.S. Secret Service and the FBI have not yet provided their own comments, redirecting inquiries to the Park Police, which is conducting the investigation.
The code "8647" has already been at the center of a political scandal before. In May 2025, former FBI Director James Comey published a photo of seashells arranged in the shape of these numbers. After criticism from Trump supporters, the post was deleted, and the Secret Service conducted a review. Comey stated at the time that he did not intend the image to convey calls for violence and was not familiar with such an interpretation of the numerical combination.
The discussion around such symbols has intensified against the backdrop of several incidents related to Donald Trump's security in recent years. In July 2024, he was injured during an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Later, law enforcement prevented several other potential threats against him.
While the origin of the mysterious inscription remains unknown, the appearance of the numbers "8647" in the center of the American capital has already caused a wide public resonance. The investigation should determine whether this was a political action, an act of vandalism, or a provocation with a more serious subtext.
