Uninvited "air guests" come at a cost.
The damage from drone incidents near airports in Germany amounted to approximately 60 million euros in 2025. This data is provided by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). According to DLR's calculations, 116 incidents related to the appearance of drones near 25 German airports were registered in 2025. These cases led to disruptions in air traffic and flight schedule violations.
Financial losses in such cases are borne by both airports and airlines, Deutsche Welle notes. Carriers are forced to spend additional funds on fuel and compensation for passengers, while airport operators lose revenue due to a reduction in the number of takeoffs and landings. The consequences also affect shops and catering establishments in airports.
Among the most significant incidents, DLR mentioned the multi-day restrictions on the operation of Munich Airport due to drones in October 2025, as well as disruptions at Frankfurt Airport in July.
