The total population of Japan was 123 million people, which is 3.09 million less compared to the figure in 2020. This information is provided in the preliminary data of the national census published by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Japan.
According to data from the agency, as of October 1, 2025, the total population of Japan, including foreigners, was 123,049,524 people. This is 2.5% less than the figure in 2020.
The population has only increased in Tokyo and Okinawa, while all other regions are experiencing a decline. Moreover, Tokyo accounts for 30.1% of the entire country's population — nearly 37 million people live there.
The decrease in Japan's population has been recorded for the third time since the 2015 census, and it is considered the most significant in the history of observations. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, this is related to declining birth rates and an aging population. As the birth rate continues to fall, the ministry forecasts that this trend will persist.
Preliminary data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs indicates that in 2025, approximately 706,000 children were born in Japan — 2.1% fewer than in 2024. The birth rate in the country has been declining for the tenth consecutive year.
In 2024, the natural population decline in Japan exceeded 900,000 people. The decrease in the number of residents in the country has been ongoing for 16 years and is the most significant since observations began in 1968.
