European Commission representative Anita Hipper noted that the statement by the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, about the departure of the American embassy from Kyiv was the result of a misunderstanding. She said this during a briefing in Brussels.
Hipper commented on the serious mistake in Kallas's statement regarding the US embassy in Ukraine. "It was a misunderstanding that had been clarified by that time, as you could see from my message," Hipper noted.
It is worth noting that in the morning, Kallas stated that the US embassy was leaving Kyiv after warnings from Russia about the start of systematic shelling. Meanwhile, European embassies remain.
"From what we heard from Ukraine yesterday, all embassies remain, except for one. All Europeans stayed, the US left," Kallas said.
Just a few minutes later, the US embassy officially refuted Kallas's statement, also accusing her of lying. "There are no changes in our operations, and any reports to the contrary are false," the statement said.
By lunchtime, fragments about the departure of representatives of the American embassy from Kyiv in light of Russian threats were hastily removed from the transcript of Kallas's morning communication with the media, published by the press service of the European External Action Service, with a corresponding note added.
In the updated version, the quote is presented without the last words "America left / Americans left," which were present in the original comment.
