The American president once again sharply commented on the situation on the island and stated that Washington is ready to assist the Cuban people.
“We have a lot of people in Cuba. We have the CIA there. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is from there, so we have a lot of experience. We will help the Cuban people. We are liberating Cuba,” Trump said.
At the same time, when asked if any escalation with Cuba should be expected, the U.S. president replied that it would not happen.
“No. There will be no escalation. I don’t think it’s needed. Look, everything is falling apart. It’s a mess, and they (the Cubans) seem to have lost control,” he added.
Does Trump want to seize Cuba?
It should be noted that recently U.S. President Donald Trump has been increasingly vocal about his plans for Cuba. He has long stated that the next target of the United States after Iran will be this Caribbean island. During a speech to members of the Forum club in West Palm Beach, he stated that Washington intends to establish control over Cuba “almost immediately.”
The Trump administration has even talked about a possible strike on Cuba.
However, as is known, Havana does not plan to surrender easily. It was recently reported that Cuba purchased drones to defend itself against the U.S.
In turn, the U.S. has deployed an aircraft carrier strike group led by the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Nimitz to the Caribbean.
In the editorial's opinion, Donald Trump's statements about Cuba are becoming increasingly harsh and reminiscent of the rhetoric of the Cold War era. Despite claims of no plans for escalation, the increased U.S. military presence and pressure on Havana noticeably heighten tensions in the region.
