The messenger launches a new mechanism for removing intimate content without users' consent, but for now, only residents of the U.S. will be able to use it.
Telegram will allow users to report intimate images or videos if they are published in the messenger without their consent.
For now, complaints can only be made by users from the United States — for this, Telegram has launched a special bot @TIDABot. It was created as part of the implementation of the American law TAKE IT DOWN Act.
The document is about "Tools to Combat Known Cases of Abuse by Blocking Technological Deepfakes on Websites and Networks."
The law aims to combat the publication of intimate images and videos without a person's consent, including deepfakes.
It was signed in the U.S. on May 19, 2025, and by May 2026, requirements for platforms regarding the procedure for removing such content will come into effect. This is why such a bot has appeared in Telegram and is only available to Americans. If a user discovers an unwanted intimate image or video involving them or related to their identity, they can report it through the specified bot. Telegram will review complaints and remove the corresponding content within 48 hours.
It is unknown whether the messenger plans to create convenient options for removing such content based on complaints from users in other countries.
In the editorial's opinion, the tightening of rules regarding intimate images and deepfakes is becoming a global trend for major internet platforms. However, limiting the new feature to the territory of the U.S. may raise questions among users from other countries who also face similar violations.
