Major Forest Fire in Poland: Firefighter Pilot Killed

In the Lublin Voivodeship of Poland, efforts continue to extinguish a large-scale forest fire that has engulfed approximately 250 hectares in the area of the village of Kozaki. The fire has been localized, but the situation remains tense.

In the Lublin Voivodeship of Poland, efforts continue to combat a large-scale forest fire near the village of Kozaki in the Biłgoraj County: the fire has engulfed approximately 250 hectares of forest, but rescuers have managed to stop the further spread of the flames.

This was reported by RMF24 and conveyed by bb.lv.

During a nighttime operation, a tragedy occurred – a firefighting plane M18 Dromader, which was involved in extinguishing the fire, crashed. The pilot died on the spot. Poland's Minister of Interior and Administration, Marcin Kerwiński, stated that the deceased was an experienced and highly qualified specialist.

According to rescuers, the situation is complicated by what is known as a crown fire, where flames spread rapidly through the treetops. Due to difficult access to the fire sites, special equipment, helicopters from the State Forests, and police have been brought in for the operation.

A crisis headquarters convened in Warsaw at night to coordinate actions. Representatives from the government, fire service, and forestry arrived at the scene. Soldiers from the Territorial Defense Forces are also joining in the efforts to mitigate the consequences of the fire.

Despite the localization of the fire, rescuers continue to monitor the situation using drones, and residents are advised not to open windows due to smoke, bb.lv reports. The situation remains under control, but the threat of the fire spreading again still exists.
