The Italian Prime Minister opposed the invitation of the Russian president to the G20 summit in December. According to her, the West has already made enough steps toward Moscow without receiving anything in return.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated on the sidelines of the EU leaders' meeting in Cyprus that the West should demand steps forward from Russian President Vladimir Putin, rather than making them toward him, as reported by Il Messaggero and Ansa on Friday, April 24. Meloni made this remark in response to a question about a possible invitation for Putin to the G20 summit in Miami in December, according to DW.

"We and the Americans, especially in recent months, have taken several steps toward Russia, while on the other side, we have not seen anything in return. I think it’s time to demand this," Meloni pointed out.

Trump, Putin, and G20

The Washington Post reported, citing sources, that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to invite Putin to the summit. Trump himself said he was unaware of this but would "not be opposed." Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that "Putin can go to Miami as a member of the G20, may not go, or another Russian representative may go."

Meloni is considered one of the closest European leaders to Trump - she was the only European leader to attend his inauguration. However, relations have strained: when Trump clashed with Pope Leo XIV, Meloni supported the pontiff. "I thought she was brave, but I was wrong," Trump responded, adding that Meloni "is not the same as she was before."

According to Meloni herself, she has not received any news from Trump since then, but relations with the U.S. remain strong.
