U.S. President Donald Trump considers Vladimir Putin's potential presence at the G20 summit in Miami "helpful," but knows nothing about Russia's invitation to it.
U.S. President Donald Trump believes that the presence of his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit, which will take place in Miami in December 2026, would be "helpful." At the same time, he is unaware of any invitation extended to Russia and doubts that Putin will attend, the White House chief said on Thursday, April 23.
The Washington Post: Trump Plans to Invite Putin to the G20 Summit
Earlier that same day, The Washington Post reported that Donald Trump intends to invite Vladimir Putin to the upcoming G20 summit. The AFP agency explains that this is part of the U.S. president's efforts to "further weaken the international isolation that Russia has brought upon itself due to its invasion of Ukraine in 2022."
However, Russian President's spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that a decision on Putin's participation in the G20 summit has not yet been made. The Russian news agency RIA Novosti, citing Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin, reported that Moscow received "an invitation to attend at the highest level." "But we will see closer to the date. God knows what will happen before then," the journalists quoted the diplomat.
Earlier, Donald Trump mentioned that he invited the leaders of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to participate in the summit in Miami.
