In Germany, new drugs against Alzheimer's disease are being tested. The University Hospital of Münster has begun testing two drugs to slow the progression of this most common form of dementia. They are called lecanemab and donanemab, as reported by Deutsche Welle. These are laboratory-created antibodies aimed at breaking down protein plaques in the brain that damage nerve cells and disrupt signal transmission, leading to memory loss.
Five patients are participating in the experiment. Every two weeks, they receive the drug and undergo MRI scans to study the brain's response. Doctors note that the new lecanemab and donanemab cannot completely stop the progression of Alzheimer's disease but can slow it down.
