Experts: the drug market in Europe is becoming increasingly dynamic and difficult to control.
Frankfurt am Main ranks first among German cities in cocaine consumption. This is reported by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, citing a study by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), based on wastewater analysis in 115 cities across Europe.
According to the study's data, as reported by Deutsche Welle, traces of cocaine in wastewater in Europe increased by more than 20% in 2025 - particularly in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain. In Frankfurt, the long-term trend shows a steady increase: since 2017, cocaine levels have risen by almost 70%. Consumption of this drug is recorded throughout the week, peaking on weekends.
Experts note that cocaine in the city has long ceased to be exclusively a "club" drug. The university hospital in Frankfurt reports an increase in crack cocaine consumption - a more dangerous form that leads to rapid addiction. However, the study only considered powdered cocaine, as crack leaves different metabolites that are not yet included in the analysis.
In addition to cocaine, traces of cannabis were found in all studied cities - particularly high levels were recorded in Germany, Slovenia, and the Netherlands. The study's results confirm data from the Federal Association of Criminal Police Officers in Germany: demand is accompanied by high drug availability. According to the agency, the drug market in Europe is becoming increasingly dynamic and difficult to control.
