King of Norway Harald V hospitalized in the Canary Islands

King of Norway Harald V has been hospitalized on the Spanish-owned island of Tenerife, where he was spending his vacation, according to a statement released by the Norwegian royal court on Tuesday, as reported by LETA citing DPA.

The 89-year-old king is receiving treatment for an infection and dehydration. The statement notes that he feels well under the circumstances.

The king's doctor will soon travel to the Canary Islands to assist the local medical staff in his treatment.

The Norwegian monarch celebrated his 89th birthday a few days ago. He, along with 88-year-old Queen Sonja, privately traveled to Tenerife to spend the winter holidays there.

Previously, the king was also hospitalized during a vacation. In 2024, he had to visit a clinic in Malaysia, where a temporary pacemaker was installed.

King Harald is the oldest reigning monarch in Europe. This year has been turbulent for him.

The eldest son of Crown Princess of Norway Mette-Marit, Marius Borg Høiby, is facing trial on charges of rape and other crimes. Additionally, the connection of Harald's daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has also tarnished the reputation of the royal family.
