The U.S. Opposes Ukraine's Participation in NATO Summit – Politico

The U.S. opposes Ukraine's official participation in the NATO summer summit, which is set to take place in July 2026 in Ankara. Washington has also intensified pressure on the alliance to reduce several areas of its foreign policy activities, including the mission in Iraq.

This was reported by Politico, citing sources familiar with the situation.

"In recent months, the U.S. has also lobbied for a reduction of NATO's peacekeeping operation in Kosovo and to prevent the official participation of Ukraine and allies from the Indo-Pacific region in the alliance's annual summit in Ankara in July," the publication states.

Such steps reflect the position of the White House, which seeks to view NATO exclusively as a Euro-Atlantic defense alliance, the article notes. This is about a rejection of "long-standing expansion into crisis management, global partnerships, and value-based initiatives that have long irritated the U.S. president and his supporters from the MAGA movement."

According to Washington's initiative, the alliance intends to limit so-called "activities beyond the area of responsibility," which go beyond its core tasks of defense and deterrence.

"These measures could lead to a sharp reduction in NATO's activity in former combat zones, as well as the exclusion of capitals, including Kyiv and Canberra, from official negotiations this summer," Politico writes.
